Lansoprazole

When you’re taking steroids, then one of the side-effects is that they can attack your gastric system amongst others.  To combat this you can do two things.  Eat either just before you take your steroids, or during.  Take a drug such as Lansoprazole.

Lansoprazole is a gastro protection drug, usually prescribed for stomach and intestinal ulcers.  It is known as a “proton pump inhibitor” which means it reduces the action of tiny “proton pumps” in the lining of the stomach which are responsible for producing stomach acid.  This drug is used to treat any condition where high levels of acid may cause problems to the patient.  In my case I take them once a day in the morning about 45 minutes before I have my breakfast and take my steroids.  I usually take the capsule and then go for an early morning walk to get my body metabolism up and engaged.

I always make sure I have some food inside my stomach when I take the steroids, usually either beans on wholemeal toast or porridge (and occasionally oven chip butties!) as I figure the double whammy of gastro protection by Lansoprazole and food is the best for my system.  So far this seems to work and I’ve had no problems with my gastric systems yet.
